Video: Nokia N8 on (Russian) TV?

I've no idea what's being said here or whether this is an actual TV station in Russia (and if that, one of the major ones or a cable channel/web channel), but it looks like this Nokia N8 demo could have been broadcast over a TV network.

  • That integrated social networks thing still doesn't seem to have kinetic scrolling.
  • 182MB free phone memory. Hmmm - I hope this will be enough C memory (barely 50mb in N97) and that apps are saved to mass memory by default.
  • I wonder if like the N900 when on TV out you can lock the screen to save battery or if like Symbian, locking the screen makes TV out go black.
  • Note that in nearly all but the very first couple of Nokia N8 demoes, the camera UI is hardly ever shown. I hope that means Nokia are still tweaking it as it has much to improve in order to make those settings/options easily usable (not buried)
Have you seen the Nokia N8 appear on TV where you are? (As an unreleased device, appearance is understandably extra rare)

Gallery: Nokia N8 vs Nokia N900 vs Nokia X6

For your easy Sunday viewing, we have Michael who has Hell has taken some comparison pics of the Nokia N8 (Blue and silver) with the N900 and X6. For the full resolution pics, visit  HellMichael's flickr page!
The N8 is already Nokia's slimmest touch screen at 12.9mm, but that tapered end makes it look even thinner.

Videos: Nokia N8 vs Nokia 5800 (in 6 Nokia N8 hands on videos).

MForumRu has a host of Nokia N8 videos for you to look at. The one that's worth noting is the N8 vs 5800 video (Screen comparison)
  • Obviously the difference is more clear in person, but even over the video you can see the richer, higher contrast, more vibrant AMOLED display from the N8 vs the TFT of the 5800.
  • Panning of the photos in the N8 is significantly smoother.
  • Zooming with pinch and zoom is of course a big plus over 5800's tap/zoom bar
  • Also wider viewing angle from the N8 with AMOLED

This next video covers homescreen, menu, SMS, but you'll also notice another comparison with the N8:
  • New icons (though 5800 is on non standard theme)
  • New QWERTY Keyboard

Camera and Video
  • Brief comparison of N8 and 5800 camera UI

Nokia N9 Leaked Photos! Or is it actually the Nokia E7? QWERTY Slider, N8 design, Ridiculous screen clarity, 8MP.

Jay Montano | June 26, 2010 at 4:50 am | Tags: Nokia, Symbian, Symbian^4, MeeGo, N9, Nokia N9, Nokia E7, E7, E9, N8-01, N8-02 | Categories: Eseries, Nokia, Nseries | URL: http://wp.me/p73J2-2tx
For many moons now we have seen the leaked image above. Some called it the N9, others called it the N8, supposedly sporting 4" screen with 8MP camera and 720p video recording amongst a host of other features.
For one thing it runs Symbian. NOT MeeGo. So how can it be Nseries if N8 is the last Symbian Nseries? N9 is the highest N and was said to be on MeeGo.
Well, it could be the E7. (Or an off chance a N8 variant like SE's "Pro" qwerty versions) N8-01, N8-02 like the Cseries and Xseries with their offshoot)
[Update. Apparently with the new naming convention, the single digit does not mean only one physical device, e.g. N8, but a tier of devices. There will be at least 3 N8 variants. 16GB, 32GB and QWERTY variant with lesser camera. N8-01, N8-02 or whatever. I hope that is not their final designation is it sort of wrecks the simplicity of single digit N. That would have been ok if it were once a year.
I think it's a good thing to have only talked about the 16GB version at the 370EUR price point before even confirming 32GB version]
We know Eldar Murtazin in on holidays with one of these. In his N8 review, he said he didn't have a Nokia N8 with him, but an analogue with QWERTY slider. Another thing he said is that he won't be the first to leak images. Now NegriElectronics has let the cat out of the proverbial bag, ah well, the gates of prepublish proto hell are opened!
To those wanting a Symbian^3 (or possibly a Symbian^4) handset with N97 like tilt QWERTY, this is for you! Check out that 4 row keyboard. Again it seems there is NO dedicated numbers button, however, the spacebar is in the middle!
Something worth noting is the apparent, "Ridiculous screen clarity", well actually they said REDiculous, so unless that's a pun on the red theme, this maybe the first Symbian Touch to have more than 640x360 pixels. Possibly at least WVGA or possibly somewhat higher, oh say to the realms of the "ridiculous" Retina Display?. They may be talking about clarity of the display tech. But they must have seen AMOLED before and it certainly won't be having Samsung's Super AMOLED.
Similar dark grey colouring to dark grey N8. More anodized aluminium? My fav colour. Man, if this had the 28mm wide angle and xenon flash I might have gone for this one.
I'm totally digging this unified design. This shape screams Nokia and the upcoming explosion (not death) of Symbian as it gradually takes over low tier handsets.
More details should appear soon. Who's publish their "insights" first, NegriElectronics or dearest Eldar?

China's first MeeGo tablet - The NPad, 10.1", Moorsetown with 8 hour battery life

This is supposedly the NPad, China's first MeeGo based tablet as showcased by Red Flag Software Co., Ltd.
I would have thought Nokia would have picked "NPad", though I'm not a fan of that name.
It features:
  • 10.1-inch touch screen
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth
  • 3G functions
  • GPS
  • and an eight-hour service time
  • preinstalled with applications like reading, instant messaging (IM), music, video, and office software
  • Powered by Intel Moorsetown
  • Price lower than iPad (which one? Base or or top end?)

Following yesterday's Nokia X5 gallery by cssinsight on flickr, here's another bunch of photos of the Nokia X2, C1 and the Nokia N8 next to the Samsung Bada powered Wave.
The C1 below is that dual SIM Nokia phone that has a sweeping, tapered design reminiscent to that of the Nokia N8.
The Nokia X2 is part of that music/youth/entertainment segment, packing a 5MP camera, LED flash and dedicated music buttons..

Video: Another Nokia N8 hands on demo

Another Nokia N8 video hands on. It's not in English but you can still appreciate the gradual evolution of Symbian^3's performance (DATED 23rd June on the phone).
For what it's meant to do, the N8 looks to be able to do it well. (Anybody hear/understand anything important being said?)
  • N8 looking fast (though there are cut always, the function within each app is really quick)
  • Ovi Maps integration in Calendar
  • Pinch and zooming in Angry Birds
  • For a sec, I thought those boxes are the new style minimalist packaging :P
Not sure where the video is from. It's uploaded by NeNoRmAl but googling the watermark sends me to motor oil websites.

Nokia N8 Second Look by Eldar Murtazin

Say what you like about Eldar Murtazin, but one thing is for sure this guy does give some insightful info into the mobile phone space especially a lot about Nokia considering his growing reputation of being a 'Nokia hater'. His Symbain 3 review was thoroughly reviewed for someone that is called a Nokia hater but if you read it it gives some harsh truths about the state of the UI on Symbian devices. You can read this and some of my thoughts here.
But after the Symbian 3 review he also posted another article which you can read here with some very interesting news from Nokia and some interesting snippets about future N8's........

Gallery: Nokia X5 pink (and black/purple?)

A collection of high res photos of the new Nokia X5 was uploaded by cssinsight on Flickr. It comes in pink, yellow, blue and purple, but above you can see what looks to be a black one, though it may just be the purple looking black due to the lighting/angle.
Whilst the pink looks frightening, the black (and well all the other colours) are actually quite ok, the black one looking great.
The Nokia X5 is a positively square phone, with a sliding qwerty keyboard. It features a rounded metal back that can be spun on a flat surface to change music tracks. Hmm ok.
It runs S60 3rd edition and packs a 5MP camera. It's like a funky Eseries.

Pics: 12" Intel Moorsetown WIMAX MeeGo tablet

Jay Montano | June 24, 2010 at 12:22 am | Tags: Tablet, MeeGo, Pics | Categories: MeeGo | URL: http://wp.me/p73J2-2sx
Yesterday we posted a video of a new MeeGo tablet. As I didn't understand Russian (if only Sergejs was at hand :p) I couldn't really tell you much from the video other than it was a big screen tablet that was remarkably slim.
A comment to that post by  tablecik links us to some photos and details of this Wimax tablet from tabletowo - it confirms the Moorsetown chip and a massive 12" screen! It's supposedly a one off prototype.
It looks nice at the front, though the side with those garish ports will take some getting used to.
Also worth noting is that it doesn't seem to be running the stunning pre-alpha MeeGo - instead the tabbed netbook interface (unless this is some additional option)

Video: Nokia N8 Dark Grey Hands (with N900).

Jay Montano | June 23, 2010 at 9:17 am | Tags: Nokia, Nseries, Symbian, Video, Nokia N8, N8 | Categories: Nokia, Nseries, Symbian, Video | URL: http://wp.me/p73J2-2s7
Here's another hands on video with the Nokia N8 by uptodateksa2. You'll also see the N900 make a guest appearance. Look how thick it is in comparison.
The "Dark Grey" colour is also now more obvious. In most photos, the N8 just looks BLACK (hence why it's mostly been called N8 black) but here you can see that dark-grey, more Gun Metal colour. (It's a lighting thing)
Otherwise, nothing new really UI wise.

Note, the N8 in this video is C0. Note missing sensor

New sleek black WiMAX MeeGo tablet demonstrated by Dmitriy Konash

Jay Montano | June 23, 2010 at 9:16 am | Tags: Nokia, Intel, Tablet, MeeGo | Categories: MeeGo, Video | URL: http://wp.me/p73J2-2s5
I stumbled across a video below showing a MeeGo tablet.
The design is unfamiliar to the ones I've seen demoed at Computex as you'll notice that completely black at the back with an uneven bezel (favouring landscape orientation). Though this may be because I'm just unfamiliar to all the devices presented there.
We don't see a demo of MeeGo working, and unless you speak Russian there's not much to understand from this video. (Though you will want to check out the Pre-Alpha video of MeeGo for a demonstration if you haven't already)

Some screencaps. It looks thin, curvy at edges with an odd uneven bezel. Looks like there is at least a 9" screen on it.

GULP.....!!!!!!

Symbian 3 review

The ever so popular Eldar Murtizan published his frankly ridiculously long review of the Symbian 3 OS that will be powering the Nokia N8 which you can read here. You have to give it to him despite his frankly hatred for Nokia he has written a long review on Symbian 3 which I bet you won't find anywhere else.

Pics: Nokia N8 Photo Samples

Jay Montano | June 22, 2010 at 11:24 am | Tags: Nokia, Symbian, Nokia N97, Sample Photos, Carl Zeiss, Nokia N8, N8 | Categories: Nokia, Nseries | URL: http://wp.me/p73J2-2rl

Here are some sample photos by the Nokia N8 uploaded by Camb078 (the more colourful photos) and apyykko.

The one below is a full 9MP image. According to the Exif (image data) this was taken at 10pm with the Jenga photo around 11pm. PM?

Crop of the chair (with MS paint so artefacts most likely gained). This is from a 9MP image, you would have gotten more to work with of course cropping from 12MP but for me, I prefer these 16:9 shots made for viewing in widescreen.
apyykko's photos are probably just every day photos (NOT 'artsy' photos like NokConv's samples designed to show case the camera capabilities by composing a shot that make the subject more interesting)
That said, I'd really love to see how a photographer or budding enthusiast would push the N8.
I mean, just take a look at what Ralph Higgo does with the Nokia N97.

We first wrote about Ralph in our post prior to N8 launch in April:

"Ode to Nokia N82′s successor – the upcoming Nokia camera phone king; killer of the digicam."

For the most beautiful photography, the biggest determining factor is the eye and talent behind the lens. That's not to say any phone camera will do. Nokia CZ Cam phones have great picture quality and so much versatility compared to its rivals. JeeBus phone is only just getting freakin digital zoom this summer!
The potential of these Nokia devices as tools for serious photography is showcased by the phenomenal work of professional commercial photographer, RALPH HIGGO who is based in Cape Town, South Africa.  His portfolio on myphotographer.posterous.com using just the Nokia N97 (yes N97!) is absolutely unbelievable
Where camera phones win over digital cameras and even bulky D-SLRs is that they're always with you. In your pocket. When an unpredicted, beautiful scene presents itself to you out of the blue, you won't have time to go back home for your camera. But as mentioned, you'll want to maximise getting those great spontaneous photos by having a great camera phone.
The Xenon flash gives more situations where the N8 can be useful, being able to capture your friends in low light and freeze the action into digital memory. You can see a demo of N8 with and without xenon flash here, (as well as samples of how well N82 performed against LED rivals)

Video: Nokia 6350 and At&t in the Wonderful World of Ovi Store

Jay Montano | June 22, 2010 at 11:23 am | Tags: Nokia, Ovi Store, Video, Advert, AT&T | Categories: Nokia, Video | URL: http://wp.me/p73J2-2ry
Remember that spectacular video and addicting song for "The Wonderful World of the Ovi Store" starring the Nokia N97
Nokia's changed that video up a bit, with the Nokia 6350 coming to AT&T.
6350? Oh well, at least something's getting to At&t from Nokia.

Also do you remember the Poll we asked last week: Does Nokia need to change their default icons and fonts?
We mentioned adding "squircles" to standard icons as one suggestion of changing it up.
What's this? Is this a AT&T thing? This is apparently an app called snaptu. (Thanks for the heads up)
I hope they do this for the Nokia N8.

What will a Nokia Tablet bring to the plate?

Since the iPad graced planet earth not so long ago, the Tech media have been nothing but annoying about the possibilities of an "iPad killer" from various Hardware vendors, the latest of course being Nokia. Of course there is still a debate wether tablets are a viable platform and not just a novelty item like past Nokia tablets have been.

Hello New Ovi Store: Version 1.07 update.

Jay Montano | June 21, 2010 at 9:51 pm | Tags: Nokia, Ovi Store, 1.07 | Categories: Nokia, OVI | URL: http://wp.me/p73J2-2qX
My twitter stream (@jaymontano) mentioned the Ovi Store being down for a bit today. All About Symbian points out that there's a new update for the Ovi Store. Lo and behold, N97 agrees and asks me to also update to the newer 1.07 version. This is NOT the big update, but a welcome incremental improvement nonetheless. (It's still green themed).
I would agree with AAS in that the Ovi Store does feel slightly faster.

With the new Ovi Store update, instead of having to open new pages, load more will simply put more apps at the bottom of the list. (You can just keep pressing "load more items..."

AAS points out that there's now a "homescreen widgets" category (though this doesn't seem to list all apps that can be homescreen widgets).
In each main 'category' (e.g. apps/games) you can narrow down Application channels (the amount differs per each main category, e.g. there's no Ovi for Business in Audio & Video).

Only two pages worth of homescreen widgets listed. Check out also football "channel"

Application channels should not be confused with "Categories" which I find is a much better way of stumbling into new applications (not new, but I thought I'd highlight it anyway)

App Categories

I'm still having problems with Ovi Store on My N97. I don't know if it's Ovi Store or N97 (most likely the latter). At the moment, I can't view "My Stuff" and I can't even sign out
I think pretty much all the handsets (latest) get the update except of course the N900 being Maemo. (Not that we need the Ovi Store too much, we have a brilliant App Manager full of apps :) though Ovi Store access like Symbian would be nice.)

Last time we posted about painting on the N900 was with the basic N900 sketch app, subject: Avatar - my attempt: - meh (thanks nonetheless for the kind comments :P)
There's an app for the N900 called MyPaint which gives those with the skill tools to create their masterpiece.
Boy, did Luovatone do just that.
In the video below, we see a blank N900 screen act like paper and before your eyes you see strawberries appear that's so realistic you could eat them.
Perfect for Wimbledon season! Absolutely incredible. My jaw was dropped like the ZomgCat.
  • Look at the precision of the resistive screen
  • The ability to use any tool as a pen
  • The keyboard for quick shortcuts
  • All the above things people hated in general about smartphones (resistive/keyboards) but are essential for this type of application

In the next video, Luovatone gives a tutorial of some of the features of this application

Lastly, we see a rose appear before your very eyes. At the end you'll see a neat trick whereby high speed stylus rubbing can erase what you've drawn.

Luovatone also has a flickr page of some of his art work

Nokia Tablet Rumours

John Wiegand-forson | June 21, 2010 at 7:25 pm | Categories: Nokia | URL: http://wp.me/p73J2-2qJ
Rumours of Nokia's tablet are rife with Digitimes reporting a tablet form Nokia imminent in the fourth quarter of this year. Eldar the famous Nokia leakemeister revealed earlier today that such rumours are sort of true and Jay posted blog post earlier which you can read here.
As I was going through the my timeline on Twitter I found a familiar tweet from eldar in russian but I found the familar word Nokia in it, so decided to check it out using google translate and found some interesting snippets from the so called Nokia tablet

It looks so promising! Choose 720p version to see that extra bit of MeeGo Goodness.
We've seen similar demoes but this is a specific demo for internet (as opposed to demo for people in noisy conventions).
  • The  homescreen is so beautiful "truly fitting "Rich Dynamic Interface" description.
  • Homescreen automatically updates to media you've been recently using.
  • Integrated Social Networking - no need to go to separate apps or websites.
  • Transitions galore (they make a hell of a difference to the UI)
  • It's so fast and responsive.
  • Photo manipulation, pinch zoom, rotation is so smooth.
  • Windowed dockable task bar of active apps
  • Animated icons in menu (something nice to look at whilst something loads)
  • Smooth HD playback
  • Intel AppUp Client
We've already seen a few Intel MeeGo tablets, but I'd love to see this on that rumoured Nokia S500 MeeGo tablet.

Nokia's been doing TV out since the days of the Nokia N93. Nokia has FAILED to promote this fantastic feature that turns your mobile phone into a media centre. Music, video, gaming, web browser - hook it up to the TV and you've got entertainment on the go.
Now with the Nokia N8 they've upped the ante with HDMI out. Crisper videos, crisper photos, Dolby digital surround sound audio. Mix this up with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and there's your Mobile Computer (along with USB to Go file transfer)
Here are three video demoes by gagadgetvideo of gagadget.com
-Home screen demo
there's a lot more talking than demoing in this one and it's in Russian.

  • Photo Gallery demo
  • Video Demo
  • Dolby Digital Surround Sound Test

  • Music player
  • Portrait conversations demo
  • Facebook
  • Camera
